No them, Just us

The sun finally came out today on what was a truly spring day. We went back to the same site to continue what we started yesterday, but they could not have been more of a contrast from yesterday. We were greeted by a thrilled Green Team, which had more members than yesterday, who introduced themselves and called us rock stars. They quickly made room for us on the site and taught us what they were doing so we could help. We all got to know them throughout the day, making jokes and chatting like we would with our friends from home. Yet, we knew nothing about their past, where they came from or where they were headed. For this day, our paths coincided. We, students on break, with our futures ahead of us, and them, interns on the Green Team with their futures ahead of them, were all working towards the same goal, and had the same complaints. Nothing else mattered. For this week, there was no them, just us. We all had the same mission.
It surprised us all how quickly not only the Green Team opened up to us, but how quickly we opened up to them. They were interested in us, who we were and what brought us to the middle to this empty lot in the middle of Harlem on our Spring break. It was amazing for all of us how any sort of preconceptions we had were erased because we were able to have normal conversations with the members of the Green Team.
We started by spreading another mulch pile that was the size of car onto the yard. We picked up many other tasks, such as clearing various items that had been left behind, such as sinks and chairs, raking leaves and picking up trash. Everyone was working alongside someone else, allowing all to talk and get to know each other. After a long day of work, it was leave. We were even more proud today than we were yesterday as we powered through the tasks given alongside the Green Team. The community garden was taking shape and nearly completed! However, tomorrow’s weather is predicted to be rather bad. It looks like we brought Ithaca with us.
